Bird singing contest in Thailand

Every year, hundreds of bird owners in South East Asia descend to the southern Thailand to pitch their singing birds against each other.

The winner takes home nearly $30,000 US.

Thousands of spectators watch as birds, kept in ornate bamboo cages draped with colourful cloths are hoisted on to hooks and suspended off the ground in the Rueso district.

Judges pick the winner based on pitch, melody and volume.
