Calgary Zoo elephants prepare to leave, but there is swimming to do

Calgary Zoo‘s elephants Swarna, Kamala and Maharani are packing up their trunks and moving south at the end of this month. Officials decided to relocate them to the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C. based on their “long-term welfare needs that will be better served by being part of a larger social group at a facility with more year-round space.” The response has been bittersweet – keepers and visitors sad to see them go, but happy they are moving to warmer and more suitable digs. The zoo is offering farewell events this month, but if you can’t see them in person, you can watch them here. Check out Kamala playing with a tree in the pool.
