Balloons help stray dogs by letting people know Estoy Aqui (I am here)

Thousands of stray dogs roam the streets in Santiago, Chile. So many that they’re often invisible to residents.

Dogs walk around people, people walk around them. But a new project devised by college students is changing how people see homeless dogs.

Using balloons tied around the collar of the dogs are written phrases like “Do not mistreat me” “Scratch my neck” and “Give me love.”

It’s pretty amazing to see how people react. People do start giving neck scratches to dogs, one woman feeds them buns and others hug the dogs with balloons on them.dogballoon2

But what was most remarkable was the way the residents of Santiago noticed the dogs. It seemed some of them saw the dogs for the first time and became aware that they were living among them.
