Close – and amazing – encounters with humpback whales

Sea-goers have witnessed some incredibly athletic displays by humpback whales in recent days.

Norwegian fishermen Svein Aasjord and Trond Ivarjord got a little closer to a pod of humpback whales than they expected. The pair was trolling the fjords near, appropriately, Whale Island, according to TV2, when a group of herring jumped out of the water and the whales followed.

“Oh, bloody hell!” one man yells, as the camera rolls on six whales emerging from beneath their boat and breaching the surface.

While the fisherman might not have wanted such a closer encounter, tourists on whale watching expeditions generally do. This video taken by Chris’ Fishing and Whale Watching in Monterey, California, also shows humpback whales repeatedly breaching the surface. It also captures a huge pod of dolphins skirting its way along the water.

And, the outfitter caught more gorgeous dolphin and whale action the next day.
