Gruesome elephant poacher tells his story

This man deserves to be in jail for the rest of his life.

The ruthless poacher who kills elephants for the high price of their tusks has been released from jail after serving just one year after his arrest.

The interview John Sumokwo, 33, gave to Mirror reporter Tom Parry describes in stomach-churning detail how he targeted and killed elephants. The words are disturbing and haunting. The elephants tried to protect the animal he targeted, another young elephant saw its parent being killed. Truly truly sickening.

But there is a good reason why the story is being told in the UK tabloid Daily Mirror. There are growing calls for sentences to be harsher for those convicted of poaching–which the story links to funding terrorism. Instead of one year, there is a push for life-sentences.

While we understand poverty has much to do with the reasons why poachers do what they do, the heartlessness of this cruel trade in animals must be stopped.  There are more pictures, including some gruesome ones of the elephants after they’re killed.
