Jasper National Park kicks off New Year with its first grizzly bear sighting

It may be the dead of winter in the Canadian Rockies when most bears are sleeping, but at least one bruin isn’t fully tucked into its den.

“The first grizzly bear of 2025 was spotted!” Jasper National Park in Alberta posted on Facebook Wednesday.

And oh my, what big paws — and claws — it has.

“A grizzly bear was observed near the Pyramid Bench trails and the Pipeline cross-country ski trail,” Parks Canada said.

The park has placed a 72-hour bear warning on the Pipestone trail — and is reminding people to practise bear safety even in winter. That means making noise, carrying bear spray, which needs to be kept warm, and keeping dogs on a leashes.

“While most bears remain in their dens during winter, some may occasionally be active for various reasons,” Parks added.

And this one was sure to take the same path most travelled.
