Love animals and Game of Thrones? Don’t buy a husky, says Peter Drinklage

One of the stars of the Game of Thrones has come out against the disturbing trend of fans taking home husky dogs because they resemble the Stark clan’s direwolves.

Peter Drinklage is partnering with PETA to urge GoT fans to think carefully before bringing into their home huskies. Many of the dogs are being abandoned in shelters once the novelty wears off.

Not only does this hurt all the deserving homeless dogs waiting for a chance at a good home in shelters, but shelters are also reporting that many of these huskies are being abandoned — as often happens when dogs are bought on impulse, without understanding their needs,” Dinklage said Tuesday in a statement released by PETA.

Direwolves are big and intelligent wolves that loom large in the mythology on Game of Thrones. Most of the direwolves in the show meet a dire end. The only two Stark characters who still have direwolves are Jon Snow and Arya Stark.

As dalmatians became popular after the Disney movie 101 Dalmatians and chihuahuas were adopted and bought from breeders after the movies Legally Blonde and Men in Black. animal lovers have long feared what happens after certain dogs suddenly become popular. As sales of those dogs spiked, so do their appearances in shelters after owners lose interest.

Drinklage, in his statement, urged people to adopt instead.

Please, please, if you’re going to bring a dog into your family, make sure that you’re prepared for such a tremendous responsibility and remember to always, always, adopt from a shelter.”
