Meatless Monday: UFC vegan fighter Nate Diaz wins over Mystic Mac, meat eater

Vegan UFC fighter Nate Diaz beat the biggest star Irish fighter Conor McGregor, a known meat eater on the paleo diet.

McGregor had the upper hand during most of the fight this weekend but Diaz, as the Guardian colourfully described it:

Conor McGregor hit a speed bump when Nate Diaz clung to his back and interrupted the flow of blood to the Irishman’s well coifed head, forcing a tapout at 4:12 of the second round in the main event of UFC 196.

Vegan supporters see this as a victory over the meat-eating paleo diet. Diaz has been a vegan since he was 17 years old and only eats raw food and steam rice. He’s also gluten and dairy free. Diaz said the raw vegan diet allows him to eat whatever he wants and still lose weight for his fights.

Diaz accepted the fight on less than two weeks’ notice at the welterweight limit of 170 pounds. He usually fights at 155 pounds, and McGregor is the 145-pound champion.

McGregor used to be a fan of the paleo diet which includes slow braised BBQ pulled pork and Hungarian smokey beef goulash as part of the meals he had delivered.

There’s also been more information recently that McGregor is now on the Sirt food diet. Typical foods eaten as part of the Sirtfood diet include kale, walnuts, strawberries, buckwheat and even red wine and dark chocolate.
