Mother raccoon rescues baby raccoon on SeaBus platform in North Vancouver

People talk about momma bears and tiger moms, but you haven’t seen anything until you’ve seen a mother raccoon swoop into action.

One such super hero mom moment was captured on video this week in North Vancouver, B.C. by TikTok user @cynthiarobbyn as she spotted a helpless baby raccoon splayed out on a SeaBus walkway as it was rescued by its mother.

“Walking toward the Sea Bus a baby raccoon dropped down beside me from above & for a bit I thought they were really hurt,” Cynthia Robbyn posted on the social media platform Sunday.

The youngster fell from the ceiling and appeared to have just “knocked the wind out of themselves,” she explained.

“Then s/he began to cry…sounding much like a human baby,” Robbyn added. “Momma to the rescue though.”

Even as passersby took their own videos, walked by oblivious to the drama and one person very nearly stepping on the baby, the mother raccoon pulled its kit to safety.

More than 3.5 million people have watched the video since it was posted.

@cynthiarobbyn Walking toward the Sea Bus a baby raccoon dropped down beside me from above & for a bit I thought they were really hurt. Seems s/he just knocked the wind out of themselves. Then s/he began to cry…sounding much like a human baby. Momma to the rescue though. ❤️ I kept my distance but stuck around not sure what to do as people were walking by. I felt okay to leave when workers asked people to keep the area clear & move along. How frightening for these animals. #seabus #northvancouver #racoon ♬ original sound – Cyn

Robbyn said she kept her distance, but stuck around to see it end well.

“I felt okay to leave when workers asked people to keep the area clear & move along. How frightening for these animals,” she wrote.

She later provided a longer account of events, including addressing concerns the baby raccoon was paralyzed.

Robbyn also said she wished she had “taken more charge of the situation warning people the raccoon was there to steer clear.”

“Thank you everyone for your concern for this precious little creature. ❤️ It warms my heart that this many people were genuinely concerned,” she added.

@cynthiarobbyn Events leading up to the Baby Racoon fall video. Most importantly the racoon was not paralyzed! They were just stunned after catching their breath from getting the wind knocked out of them. When some people continued posting worried comments about the wayward baby, Robbyn made one more video.

“After I stopped recording the mother was pulling her scared baby up the pole. I’m not a vet but I truly feel they are okay,” she wrote.

And others posted the same.

One TikTok user responding, “I rehab raccoons they fall from higher then [sic] that and survive all the time. Its [sic] ok. Just a little shocked. Momma was doin her job.”
