Mysterious hairless animal found in Florida dies

We posted a story last week about a sweet critter found shivering under a car in Orlando, Florida.

There was confusion about exactly what she was but staff at Back to Nature Refuge found out that the mystery critter was actually a hairless raccoon that had a genetic mutation.

Staff valiantly tried to keep the animal alive after her condition deteriorated while in their care and she passed away in her sleep.

We couldn’t be more grateful for the chance to try to save her. And though we couldn’t save her, we will choose not to look at her passing as a failure, but as a small success.

The refuge staff said her arrival on their doorsteps allowed them to share the animal’s unique beauty with the world and she brought awareness not only to her condition but to her species which is often looked at as a nuisance.
