Petition to change Cincinatti Bengals to Cincinatti Harambes to honour gorilla

A petition to change the name of the NFL team Cincinatti Bengals to honour the gorilla killed earlier this year at the Cincinatti Zoo has generated thousands of signatures in support.

So far, the petition on Change.org  has been signed by more than 15,000 supporters. It’s quest was to receive at least 25,000 backers before being presented to the team.

Harambe was shot and killed at the Cincinnati Zoo after a three-year-old boy, Isiah Gregg, climbed into his enclosure. The zoo made the decision to shoot and kill the 17-year-old gorilla once it started dragging him around as they feared for his safety.

The petition was started three days ago by Julian Ortiz who wrote:

The Cleveland Browns named their team after a former Coach who made a great impact on their city so why cant the Bengals do it as well in honor of a hero who made an impact on their city too! #DicksoutforHarambe

Yes, you read that hashtag right…whatever it is supposed to mean, that last line has received a bit of trolling by commentators.

It appears to be a joke but some news outlets are still taking it seriously.
