Photo of the Year: Man and Momo the cat vs High River floods

Both of us Critter Curators have been lucky enough to work with some of the best news photographers in the country.

This photograph blew us away.

It was taken almost a year ago when flood waters in Calgary and High River reaches historic levels.

Shooting for Canadian Press, news photographer Jordan Verlage captured a series of photographs after seeing resident Kevin Yeats realize that his truck was no match for for fast-rising waters.

The Highwood River in High River had overflowed his banks and Yeats had no choice but to crawl out the back window with his cat Momo as the flood waters swept him downstream and submerged the cab on June 30, 2013.

For this remarkable photo, Verlage won the News Photographers Association of Canada’s Photo of the Year. The gala event was held in Vancouver last weekend.
