Pygmy owls: they wink, they get stuck in the snow. They’re adorable.

A new book by photographer Jari Peltomaki focuses on the Pygmy owl, one of the smallest species in Europe. Small they may be, but as Peltomaki’s book makes clear, Pygmy owls have huge personalities. There are 12 owl species in Northern Europe ranging from the huge Great Grey which has a round head as large as a kid’s to the tiny Pygmy owl. Peltomaki who co-photographed the book with David Tipling, two of the world’s finest bird photographers, set up their shots using hundreds of nesting boxes in the forests of Finland and staked out their owl subjects until they appeared ready for their close-ups.
