Rare right whale found off B.C.’s northern coast

North Pacific right whales were hunted to the edge of extinction. Nobody had even seen one in 60 years until James Pilkington, a biologist with Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans spotted one off the west coast of Haida Gwaii while he was surveying in a Coast Guard vessel. The biologists aboard the CCGS Arrow Post watched the whale for a total of 17 hours in the days that followed.
