Meet Schildi, a celebrity tortoise if we’ve ever seen one. This guy is making headlines from Slate to CNET but the original article appeared here at The Local , an English-language German newspaper. Poor Schildi, abandoned by his owners was found by rescuers. He’s missing a leg and the injury was pretty bad. Maggots crawling on necrotic flesh, bone showing. Fortunately, the vet at Birdconsulting International veterinary practice in Baden, was able to find something that could replace the leg. The vet, Marcellus Burkle raided the toy box of the practice manager’s daughter and came up with wheels and spacer blocks. Soon enough, Schildi was racing around on his own three legs and wheels.
