Toronto Zoo elephants move to California

After years of controversy – and planning – the Toronto Zoo’s elephants arrived in a sanctuary in California in October. The fate of Iringa, Toka and Thika was under intense scrutiny and even attracted the attention of former game show host Bob Barker.  Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) sanctuary, which occupies 2,300-acres in San Andreas, Calif., is now the forever home to the pachyderms.

But the emotional debate about elephants in captivity continues. Plans are in the works for the remaining  elephants at the Calgary Zoo to move south.Barker also wants to see Lucy, the lone elephant at the Edmonton Valley Zoo, moved to a sanctuary.

PAWS put together a photo album chronicling the 70-hour journey of Toronto’s elephants as well as a series of videos.
