A photographer captured what might best be described as an real-life underwater matryoshka set.
Tim Samuel snapped photos of these living nesting dolls in the waters off Byron Bay on Australia’s east coast: A fish completely engulfed in a jellyfish.
“I found this fish trapped inside a Jellyfish while freediving in Byron Bay,” Samuel posted on Instagram. “He was trapped in there but controlled where the Jellyfish was moving.”
His photos, actually taken last December, went viral this week after @discoverocean posted them to its more than 660,000 followers.
“We knew we had found something special, but had no idea just how unique and rare this sighting was,” Samuel wrote of his sighting while scouting for nature shots. “I’m completely blown away by all the attention it is getting from all over the world.”
