Barcelona pigeons are mainly a pain for residents in the city, with as many as 85,000 of them making this historic, architecturally rich place a major pooping ground for bird.
The birds create such a mess that there was a proposal to shoot them down, but that plan was gunned down by animal activists.
Now a new plan has ben developed to reduce the number of pigeons by putting them on birth control pills. The contraceptives will be distributed via 40 pill-dispensing bird feeders installed throughout the city.
A 20 per cent reduction in the number of pigeons is expected within the next year. By 2020, it’s expected the pigeon population will decrease by 70 to 80 per cent.
The pill will be rolled out around other cities affected by ‘too many’ birds if it proves successful in Barcelona.
