Grizzly bear and cubs given space with extended road closure in Jasper National Park

Bears are being given the priority this Canada Day in Jasper National Park.

The access road to Lac Beauvert remains closed to vehicle traffic as the Old Fort Point gate opening is postponed until further notice, Jasper National Parks announced.

“This measure is in response to Grizzly bear 222 and her cubs returning to this valley-bottom habitat area,” Parks Canada explained on social media Sunday.

“Reducing vehicle traffic will help lower congestion and overall disturbance, which can help the bears from becoming further habituated to humans,” the federal agency added.

People can still get to the popular lake and nearby Jasper Park Lodge either by walking or by bicycle.

Or, maybe just let the bears have the run of the place for the time being. A happy July 1 for them — and everyone.
