As Speaker of Alberta’s legislature, Nathan Cooper is known for his passion for parliamentary procedure. He’s also developed a reputation for having a solid sense of humour.
Perhaps it comes as little surprise then, as he introduced the newest member to the venerable office: a cute kitten.
“Order order !!!” Cooper tweeted Thursday. “Meet #hansard the Speaker new cat.”

With the announcement, he posted an image of a feisty black and white kitty mid-meow posed atop the Speaker’s chair.
Hansard, of course, is the official report of what is said in the provincial legislature, as well as the House of Commons in Ottawa and other legislative buildings across the country.
The United Conservative Party MLA for Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills is now in his second term in the job, essentially playing impartial referee during debates and votes.
Still, some members weren’t impressed with Cooper’s unilateral edict to bring in the new, unelected member.
How was said cat chosen? Oregano has questions about fairness and transparency 😐

Naturally, a Twitter account was promptly created.
Will I get in more trouble when @NathanCooperAB finds out I have my own Twitter account or when he finds out I already scratched the legs of the Speaker’s chair? #ableg
