Inuka, first polar bear born in tropics, gets ice cake for birthday

Good news for Inuka, bad news for salmon, the polar bear’s favourite food.

To celebrate Inuka’s 24th birthday on Dec 25th, staff at the Singapore Zoo, who are also expert kacang makers according to the video below, put all the polar bear’s favourite food in an icy cake.

Kacang is an dessert filled with lots of different toppings including red beans and cereal and candies topped with shaved ice.

For Inuka’s kacang birthday treat, he got something you won’t find normally among the Singaporean food hawkers who traditionally sell the dessert. A whole salmon was encased in ice for Inuka. Other toppings on his cake include blueberries, watermelon and strawberries topped with whipped cream.

Inuka is the first polar bear born in the tropics. He was born in 1990 in his mother’s den at the Singapore Zoo and has spent his entire life in his $8 million enclosure which is the size of 2½ basketball courts. His home includes a waterfall, pool and an ice cave.

Every day he gets fed about 30 kilogram of food and apparently all the ice he wants.
