A TV critic’s take on watching Animal Planet

Slate’s TV critic Willa Paskin spent the weekend watching hours of Animal Planet. Here’s her review after perusing tons of videos about fluffy puppies, a baby sheep, baby goats and miniature pigs. She gives her thoughts on the reality show about two brothers running an aquarium business and another set in Costa Rica about a sloth refuge called Meet the Sloths. Tempted to watch? Don’t bother. Sloths are extremely slothful and sleep 80 per cent of the time. There’s also a host on another show who feels the need to anthropomorphize the antics of animals into bite-size Hallmark lessons. So if you really want to find out what rabbits foraging for vegetables and then cuddling together to sleep may tell us about human nature, that’s the place to go.
