Lake turns animals into statues

Photographer Nick Brandt  visited Tanzania’s Lake Natron and captured mesmerizing images of dead birds and bats seemingly frozen in death. There’s some debate about how the creatures died, but throw them into the extremely alkaline lake that is rife with volcanic ash, sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate and voila, eerie calcified animal statues.
