UPDATE:
Pop superstar Miley Cyrus made a low-key visit to British Columbia this weekend with her brother Braison Cyrus to continue her push to save the province’s wolves from being killed.
The provincial government has hired hunted to kill wolves, in some cases using helicopters. The B.C. government maintains it needs to cull the wolves in order to save the caribou, which wolves hunt and eat.
Cyrus has recently posted to Instagram about her hope to get her fans involved in saving the wolves.
And now the Pacific Wild Alliance, a group trying to get the cull banned, got some high-profile help when Cyrus came to B.C. to show her support
According to the provincial government, the wolf cull is necessary to save caribou herds under threat from wolf predation. The Selkirk herd is at high risk of local extinction. The population has declined from 46 caribou in 2009 to 27 in 2012, and to 18 as of March 2014. Evidence points to wolves being the leading cause of mortality. The Pacific Wild conservation group thanked Cyrus for posting about the wolf cull and directing her fans to sign a petition to demand the government stop the cull. B.C.’s Premier Christy Clark defended the province’s practice. In a Canadian Press story, Clark said if she needs advice about twerking she’ll call the pop star.
